City of Wolverhampton Council has started building a depot on Hickman Avenue for taxi and private hire licensing, the fleet workshops and the travel unit.
The council announced it on Wednesday 14 October. Old light industrial units on the site have been demolished. McPhillips is the contractor. Services are expected to move in from the end of 2027. No opening day has been set, and licensing stays where it is until then.
Where drivers go now
The licensing office is at the former Loxdale Primary School, Chapel Street, Bilston, WV14 0PH. That is the address on the council’s bracket collection page. Its driver newsletters say it no longer operates from Hickman Avenue. The school site is later marked for housing.
The fleet workshops are still at Culwell Street in the city centre. After they leave, those buildings are to be demolished and the land prepared for homes under the Brewers Yard plan. The council says that city-centre scheme, once the land is unlocked, would be houses, apartments, and retail and commercial space, a few hundred metres from the new transport interchange. That is not the licensing office.
The council also says the building work at Culwell Street and Loxdale will mean hundreds of construction jobs, and that the new depot will help it cut energy costs and move its own vehicles from combustion engines to electric.
Councillor Qaiser Azeem, cabinet member for resident services, said the purpose-built depot would put those services on a more suitable base.
The decision does not change licence conditions, and drivers have not been given a new address.
