Taxi driver ends a fake-note fare at the police station

A 23-year-old was arrested. Officers found a knife under his mattress.

A Nottingham taxi driver took his passenger to a police station after the man tried to pay with counterfeit notes.

The ride was booked from Nottingham Road at 11.30pm on Tuesday 13 October. The passenger kept changing the route, so the driver asked how he would be paying. He handed over a £20 note. The driver knew it was fake from the way it felt. Asked about the cash, he produced further notes, and those were fake as well.

He was not taken to the place he had asked for. The driver took him to Radford Road police station in Hyson Green, where he was arrested.

What officers found

Nottinghamshire Police executed a warrant at the man's address. They found what the force called a Rambo knife under his mattress. No further counterfeit notes were recovered. A cannabis cultivation kit was seized.

The man is 23. He was arrested on suspicion of using counterfeit currency and of possessing an offensive weapon in a private place. The force has not said that he has been charged.

Neighbourhood Inspector Liz Gaskin, who covers Radford, called it a fantastic piece of work by a Nottingham taxi driver. She said that once he saw the money was fake, he decided the journey would end with a night in custody, and that the search had taken a dangerous weapon out of circulation.
