Singapore taxi and PHV drivers offered path into bus jobs

From 1 October 2026 a 2–6 month career conversion lets cabbies and PHV drivers train as bus captains full- or part-time.

Singapore is offering taxi and private-hire drivers a structured route into bus captain jobs as autonomous vehicles reshape point-to-point work.

From 1 October 2026, the Point-to-Point to Bus Captain pathway under the Career Conversion Programme runs two to six months, full- or part-time, with on-the-job training plus skills such as EV diagnostics and bus interchange operations. Class 4 licence holders get a shorter course. Applications go direct to Go-Ahead Singapore, SBS Transit, SMRT Buses or Tower Transit.

The Straits Times and CNA report the Ministry of Transport, Skills and Workforce Development Agency and NTUC joint announcement of 28 September 2026. Singaporeans and PRs becoming bus drivers are lined up for higher starting pay and sign-on bonuses from 1 January 2027, including a government-funded $450 monthly increase and an extra $2,000 sign-on. Unions say flexible arrangements are still being discussed so drivers can balance bus work with other income.
