Redditch taxi faces a licence review over a corroded part

A corroded suspension part was judged close to failure, and one Wolverhampton driver had an expired licence.

West Mercia Police, Worcestershire Regulatory Services and licensing officers from Wolverhampton City Council checked about 40 taxis and private hire vehicles in Redditch on the evening of Friday 25 September.

The Redditch vehicles

Officers stopped 20 vehicles licensed by Redditch. Police said compliance was generally very good and most drivers cooperated fully.

Nine of those vehicles were sent for a further mechanical inspection. Eight were safe and well maintained. On the other, inspectors found serious safety defects, including a heavily corroded suspension component assessed as being at risk of imminent failure.

That vehicle's licence will now be reviewed. Police have not named the driver, said whether it is a hackney carriage or a private hire vehicle, or said that the licence has already been suspended.

Wolverhampton plates

About 20 vehicles licensed by Wolverhampton were checked on the same night. One driver had an expired taxi licence. West Mercia Police said Wolverhampton City Council would take the appropriate action.

Worcestershire Regulatory Services carries out licensing work for Redditch Borough Council. A vehicle licensed by another council can still work in the town, which is why Wolverhampton officers were there. Police said similar checks will be held again soon.

The figures were reported by the Redditch Standard.
