Inverness taxi boss seeks early Highland fare review

Gavin Johnston of Inverness Taxis wants tariffs reviewed before March 2027 as diesel nears £2 a litre locally.

Inverness Taxis owner Gavin Johnston is urging Highland Council to bring forward its taxi tariff review as local diesel approaches £2 a litre.

The Inverness Courier reports Johnston saying fuel costs are “spiralling out of control” and that maximum fares are set by the council, which normally reviews every 18 months — next due around March 2027 — but can act sooner when circumstances change. He cited diesel at 199.9p/litre at some Inverness stations, plus rising insurance, vehicles, repairs, licensing and living costs.

The current Highland tariff took effect on 9 February 2026 after a review that left rates unchanged except lifting the maximum luggage charge from £5 to £10. Courier comment threads show mixed public views on whether another rise is justified. No council decision to open an early review is reported in the pieces cited.
