Highland taxi fares compared as fuel hits £2 a litre

Courier stacks Tariff 1 against Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth and Aberdeen while the next formal review waits until 2027.

As Inverness diesel breached £2 a litre, the Inverness Courier compared Highland taxi tariffs with other Scottish cities.

Under Highland Tariff 1, a basic hire for up to four passengers starts at £3.70 for the first 785 yards, then £2.20 a mile. Glasgow is cited at £4.50 plus £3 a mile; Edinburgh daytime £3.60 plus £3.30; Perth £3.89 plus £2.20; Aberdeen daytime £3 plus £2.40. The council’s latest review (from February 2026) left rates unchanged except raising the luggage cap from £5 to £10; the next scheduled review is around March 2027.
