Govt: disability taxi surcharges risk £1,000 fines

Lightwood: WAV clamping/extra fees can mean prosecution; councils should suspend licences even without conviction.

Taxi and private hire drivers or operators who add disability-based surcharges — including wheelchair clamping fees — face prosecution and fines of up to £1,000, ministers have warned.

Reporting says Transport Minister Simon Lightwood’s written answer to Leicester East MP Shivani Raja. He said the Government is committed to discrimination-free taxi and PHV access and that licensing authorities must enforce Equality Act non-discrimination duties. DfT best-practice guidance tells councils to investigate and prosecute where evidence allows, and to consider suspension or revocation when a discrimination complaint will not produce a criminal conviction.
