Glasgow cabbie’s alert saves passenger after heart stops

Charlie Matthews spotted Jake Sinclair slumped en route to Stobhill; staff restarted his heart after five shocks.

Glasgow taxi driver Charlie Matthews helped save passenger Jake Sinclair after Sinclair suffered a cardiac arrest in the back of the cab on the way to Stobhill Hospital.

Daily Record and Glasgow Times report Sinclair, 64, was travelling for a routine procedure on 1 September 2026 after a heart attack in July. Matthews, 63, noticed him slumped and quiet as they arrived, alerted staff, and around 20 hospital workers rushed out to perform CPR. Sinclair’s heart was restarted after five shocks; he was moved to Golden Jubilee Hospital, received two stents, spent days in intensive care and on a ventilator.

Daughter Donna later traced Matthews via Glasgow Taxis. The pair reunited at the family home around 15 September. Glasgow Taxis praised Matthews and thanked NHS staff at Stobhill.
