Falkirk taxi fares to rise after four-year freeze

Council executive backs +20p per journey and a running mile of £2.20 from £2.06, citing fuel and licence costs.

Falkirk Council’s executive has given final approval to higher maximum taxi fares after consulting the public and the trade.

The Falkirk Herald reports the change adds 20p to every journey and lifts the running mile by about 7% from £2.06 to £2.20. Portfolio holder Cllr Gordon Forrest said the last rise was four years ago and fuel costs remain high because of Middle East conflict, alongside higher driver and operator licence fees. Drivers may charge less than the maximum.

Proposals were first agreed last June with the local taxi forum. Some objectors feared higher prices would deter passengers while the trade is already under pressure. The Herald says the new tariff is due in November.
