Denbighshire County Council’s licensing committee has agreed not to raise hackney fares for 2027 — leaving the highest published rates in Wales unchanged.
Lead licensing officer Nicky Jones told members Denbighshire sits ahead of Swansea and above the English average, with other North Wales authorities charging “a lot less.” Current tariffs date from October 2025, when Tariff 1 rose from £2.50 to £3 per mile and Tariff 3 from £3.75 to £4.50. A trade consultation drew 12 replies: seven favoured keeping fares, one wanted inflation uplift, four proposed alternatives. Cllr Merfyn Parry backed a freeze after the “quite substantial” 2025 rise; Cllr Ellie Chard argued higher standards justify the price. A further review will precede 2028 rates.
